Tasa Hawai'i connects Waimea Valley to the Sherwood Network

Waimea Valley on O'ahu's North Shore is one of the most ecologically sensitive sites in Hawai'i — a botanical garden and cultural site where the rule is simple: leave the land as you found it. That rule has shaped every decision made there, including the ones about coverage.

It also made connectivity nearly impossible. Carriers couldn't build towers, and underground cable runs were off the table. Staff, researchers, and visitors moved through a dead zone, and the valley ran on radios and luck.

Tasa Hawai'i, a local connectivity provider, found a way that respected the land. Instead of a build, they mounted small Sherwood-compatible hotspots on existing structures and routed traffic through the Wi-Fi the valley already used for its own operations. No new towers. No ground disturbance. Nothing added to the landscape that wasn't already there.

The result is coverage across the visitor center, offices, and key garden areas — the places people actually are — without a single trench. And because the deployment rides on existing infrastructure, it can expand quietly as the valley does.

The environment doesn't make it easy. Humidity, salt air, and tropical rain are constant; equipment that fails here fails fast. Tasa chose hardened enclosures for every outdoor mount, and remote management means most maintenance happens without anyone setting foot on the grounds.

Sherwood's model is what made the project viable at all. There's no big upfront build to finance — the site's existing Wi-Fi does the work, and coverage proofs settle on the Robinhood Chain. The valley's operators can see exactly what the network carries, and the deployment earns for the traffic it serves, priced in SHW.

Connectivity and conservation rarely meet. At Waimea Valley, they share the same trail — light on the land, and live on the Sherwood Network.
